In Takayama the old Edo streets are still intact, and the air comes down from the Japanese Alps. You sleep that night in a ryokan, on day seven of this 10-day Japan tour. Before that come Tokyo, Kyoto and Kanazawa, where you find samurai history, gardens and local crafts. After it, you ride back to Tokyo.
It suits travellers who want culture with some independence. Guides lead half-day tours in Tokyo and Kyoto, and a 7-day Japan Rail Pass comes with the package. Days three and nine are left open for you to plan yourself. Luggage is forwarded between Tokyo and Kyoto, and breakfast is included daily. Day 1: Arrival in Tokyo
An English-speaking assistant meets you on arrival and takes you to your hotel. It is an arrival day, so keep plans light. Step out if you have the energy and take in the sound and light of the city.
Day 2: Tokyo Highlights with a Guide
A guide leads a half-day tour of Tokyo, in English. It runs from historic temples to modern landmarks. What is left of the day is yours.
Day 3: Tokyo at Your Own Pace
Nothing is fixed today, so use it your way. Your Japan Rail Pass or an IC card gets you around. Ideas include anime shops, sushi counters and a high view over the city.
Day 4: Bullet Train to Kyoto
Most of today is spent on the bullet train to Kyoto. Your luggage is forwarded ahead, so you travel with a light load. Kyoto is known as the city of a thousand temples.
Day 5: Kyoto with an Expert Guide
Your guide takes you through Kyoto on a half-day tour, in English. Stops include the Golden Pavilion, Fushimi Inari and quiet gardens.
Day 6: Rail Day to Kanazawa
The train takes you to Kanazawa. The city has samurai history, gardens and local crafts to see. Sip tea in the geisha districts if you want a slow stop.
Day 7: Takayama and a Ryokan Night
Today you head into the Japanese Alps to Takayama. Its Edo streets are well preserved, and the air is alpine. Tonight you sleep in a traditional ryokan, the one ryokan night of the trip.
Day 8: Train Back to Tokyo
You ride the train back to Tokyo on a scenic route. If you have time when you arrive, shopping or an evening stroll are options.
Day 9: Your Last Day in Tokyo
This is your last full day in Tokyo, and it is open. Revisit a favourite place or slow down before your flight. Optional tours cost extra.
Day 10: Departure from Japan
Your tour ends today. Check out and head to the airport for your flight.
